Train Your Brain for Success

If you’ve ever wondered why you procrastinate, why your emotions sometimes hijack your day, or how some people seem to stay laser-focused while you’re distracted by a squirrel, you’re not alone. The secret might just lie between your ears. That’s right. We’re talking about your brain.

Understanding the major parts of the brain and how they function isn’t just for neuroscientists in lab coats. It’s for entrepreneurs, teachers, leaders, parents, and anyone who wants to level up their mental game. The truth is, when you understand how your brain works, you can start working with it instead of constantly fighting against it.

So let’s break it down in a way that’s fun, functional, and useful. Not to mention, it’ll help you become more successful. And who doesn’t want that?

Meet Your Brain: A Quick Tour of the Big Three

There are many parts of the brain, but three main areas dominate when it comes to understanding mindset, behavior, and success: the prefrontal cortex, the limbic system, and the brainstem. Think of them like a team with very different personalities, trying to run your life from a very cramped office.

1. The Prefrontal Cortex – The CEO of You

Located right behind your forehead, the prefrontal cortex is responsible for planning, decision-making, impulse control, and goal setting. It’s the part of your brain that says, “Hey, maybe don’t eat that third donut, you’ve got goals.”

This is your executive function center. When it’s activated and healthy, you can focus, strategize, and regulate your emotions. When it’s tired or overloaded? Well… let’s just say Netflix and chips become your boss.

Want to be more successful? Strengthen this area. Meditation, focused work, prioritization, and even quality sleep help keep your prefrontal cortex in tip-top shape. As I talk about in Change Your Mindset, Change Your Destiny, mastering your thought life is the first step to changing your results. It starts with the part of your brain that thinks ahead.

2. The Limbic System – Your Emotional Alarm System

Deep in your brain lies the limbic system, home to the amygdala, hippocampus, and a few other parts that specialize in emotion and memory. Think of the amygdala as your brain’s “panic button.” It’s what kicks in when you’re cut off in traffic or hear a loud noise. Great for survival. Not so great when it overreacts to a mildly critical email.

Your limbic system doesn’t care about your goals. It cares about comfort, survival, and safety. That’s why stepping outside your comfort zone feels so hard. The limbic system starts screaming, “DANGER! You might fail!” even when you’re just trying something new like public speaking or launching a business.

Understanding this part of the brain helps you recognize emotional overreactions and calm them. It reminds you that fear isn’t always a signal to stop. Sometimes it’s just your limbic system doing its (overdramatic) job.

3. The Brainstem – The Auto Pilot

The brainstem is the oldest part of the brain. The lizard brain, as some call it. It controls your automatic functions like breathing, heart rate, and digestion. It’s not flashy, but it keeps you alive. You can thank your brainstem for not forgetting to blink while reading this.

While the brainstem doesn’t help you close business deals, it plays a key role in your stress response. When it senses danger, it triggers the fight-or-flight reaction. If you’re constantly in high-stress environments, your brainstem gets stuck in “survival mode,” and your prefrontal cortex, the rational part, gets sidelined.

Want success? You need a calm brain. Deep breathing, prayer, exercise, and rest signal your brainstem that you’re safe. So it can calm down and hand control back to your prefrontal cortex.

Why Knowing This Helps You Succeed

Here’s where it gets powerful: knowing how your brain works gives you an edge. Success isn’t just about working hard. It’s about working smart. And smart starts with self-awareness.

When you realize that your fear of starting that side hustle isn’t laziness but an amygdala freakout, you stop beating yourself up and start managing it. When you know that your scattered focus is because your prefrontal cortex is exhausted from doomscrolling all morning, you can change the habit and regain control.

Here are a few brain-based tips for success:

  • Create routines. Your brain loves predictability. A solid morning routine activates your prefrontal cortex and builds momentum.

  • Get moving. Exercise doesn’t just sculpt your body; it feeds your brain with oxygen, improving memory and decision-making.

  • Limit decision fatigue. Fewer daily decisions free up brainpower for what matters. That’s why successful people like Steve Jobs wore the same outfit every day. (Not that you have to rock a black turtleneck.)

  • Sleep. You can’t hustle your way around exhaustion. Your brain resets during sleep. Skip it, and you’re basically trying to drive a Ferrari with no gas.

  • Practice gratitude. Neuroscience shows that gratitude rewires the brain toward optimism. That’s not just touchy-feely. It’s strategy.

You’re Not Broken—You’re Wired

The most encouraging thing you can take from this post? You’re not stuck with a broken brain. You’re just human.

The real win comes when you stop shaming yourself for every impulse, fear, or distraction and start learning to manage them. Your brain, with all its complexity, can be trained like a muscle. And when you start aligning your mental habits with your goals, you’ll begin to see change in what you do.

That’s why I wrote Change Your Mindset, Change Your Destiny. Because so many people walk through life defeated, thinking they just “don’t have what it takes.” But what they really don’t have… is the brain training manual.

Now you do.
